Pin Valley National Park Location

Pin Valley National Park is located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India. It is situated in the cold desert region of the Spiti Valley, surrounded by the Pir Panjal and Parvati mountain ranges.


Pin Valley National Park is part of Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve. It is the only National Park in Himachal Pradesh which is situated in the cold desert area.

The elevation of the Pin Valley National Park ranges from about 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) near Ka Dogri to more than 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) at its highest point.

3. Establishment of the National Park: Pin Valley National Park was established in 1987 with the aim of conserving the unique ecosystem of the region. The park was designated as a protected area to safeguard its biodiversity, including the endangered snow leopard population.

Pin Valley National Park covers an area of about 675 square kilometres (261 sq mi). It has an area of 675 Sq. Km. as core zone and 1150 Sq. km as buffer zone.


The vast expanse of the Pin Valley National encompasses diverse landscapes, including high-altitude alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and barren cliffs.

Pin Valley National Park River

Pin Valley National Park is named after the Pin River, which flows through the park. The Pin River is a tributary of the Spiti River, which in turn is a tributary of the Sutlej River. 


The Pin River originates from the Pin Parvati Pass, located in the Great Himalayan Range, and it meanders through the park, cutting through the rugged terrain of the cold desert region.




Pin Valley National Park Tribe

There are about 17 villages situated in the periphery of the Pin Valley National Park with a total population of about 1600 people. Besides this there are about 17 Dogharies (Summer settlements) with some cultivation inside the park. These Dogharies are used as summer residences by these people. 


The local residents in the whole Pin Valley conists of scheduled tribes belonging to Buddhist community. There is a famous Gompa in the Kungri vilage which is situated on the buffer zone of the Pin Valley National Park. The Chham dance and Buchen dance by the Lamas of this Gompa are very famous dances in the pin valley.

Pin Valley National Park is home to a diverse range of flora, which has adapted to the harsh cold desert environment of the Spiti Valley. Despite the arid and extreme climatic conditions, the park supports a variety of plant species, including hardy shrubs, alpine meadows, and patches of coniferous forests.

(1) Alpine Meadows:

The Pin Valley National Park features extensive alpine meadows, also known as bugyals, which are carpeted with a variety of grasses, sedges, and flowering plants. These meadows burst into colorful blooms during the summer months, creating a vibrant landscape. Common plant species found in the meadows include various grasses, asters, gentians, and primroses.


(2) Juniper:

Juniper is one of the dominant tree species in Pin Valley National Park. It thrives in the dry, cold climate and is well adapted to the high-altitude environment. The juniper trees provide shelter and food for various wildlife species in the park.


(3) Willow:

Willows are commonly found near water bodies and along the banks of rivers in the park. These deciduous trees play an essential role in preventing soil erosion and provide habitat for birds and small mammals.


(4) Poplar and Birch: 

Poplar and birch trees can be found in some areas of the park, particularly in the higher elevations where the climate is relatively milder. These trees add to the diversity of the park's flora and provide habitat for a variety of bird species.


(5) Alpine Tundra: 

At higher elevations, the vegetation transitions to alpine tundra, characterized by low-growing, hardy plant species. Mosses, lichens, and dwarf shrubs, such as dwarf willows and rhododendrons, are commonly found in these regions.
