The sanctuary is home to a variety of bird species. The bird population peaks between September and December, with up to 10,000 birds congregating during peak season in November and December.


The sanctuary is open to tourists throughout the year. The best time to visit is during the months of November and December. There are two public observation towers for birdwatching, and accommodation facilities are available in PWD Rest House and private lodges in Muthupet and Thiruthuraipoondi.
